Details
A vulnerability classified as critical was found in musicbrainz Libmusicbrainz Svn up to 2.1.2. This vulnerability affects the function mbhttp::download in the library lib/http.cpp. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Multiple buffer overflows in libmusicbrainz (aka mb_client or MusicBrainz Client Library) 2.1.2 and earlier, and SVN 8406 and earlier, allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) or execute arbitrary code via (1) a long Location header by the HTTP server, which triggers an overflow in the MBHttp::Download function in lib/http.cpp; and (2) a long URL in RDF data, as demonstrated by a URL in an rdf:resource field in an RDF XML document, which triggers overflows in many functions in lib/rdfparse.c.
The bug was discovered 08/13/2006. The weakness was shared 08/17/2006 by Luigi Auriemma (Website). The advisory is available at xforce.iss.net. This vulnerability was named CVE-2006-4197 since 08/17/2006. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details and also a public exploit are known.
It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 4 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 22920 (GLSA-200610-09 : libmusicbrainz: Multiple buffer overflows), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks and running in the context l.
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 3 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (28368), Exploit-DB (28384), Tenable (22920), SecurityFocus (BID 19508†) and OSVDB (27944†). If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
