Summary
A vulnerability described as critical has been identified in MaterialX. Affected by this issue is some unknown functionality of the component MTLX XML Parser. Executing a manipulation can lead to stack-based overflow. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2025-53009. The attack may be launched remotely. Furthermore, there is an exploit available.
Details
A vulnerability classified as critical was found in MaterialX (unknown version). This vulnerability affects an unknown code block of the component MTLX XML Parser. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a stack-based overflow vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-121. A stack-based buffer overflow condition is a condition where the buffer being overwritten is allocated on the stack (i.e., is a local variable or, rarely, a parameter to a function). As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:
MaterialX is an open standard for the exchange of rich material and look-development content across applications and renderers. In versions 1.39.2 and below, when parsing an MTLX file with multiple nested nodegraph implementations, the MaterialX XML parsing logic can potentially crash due to stack exhaustion. An attacker could intentionally crash a target program that uses OpenEXR by sending a malicious MTLX file. This is fixed in version 1.39.3.
The advisory is shared for download at github.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2025-53009 since 06/24/2025. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
It is possible to download the exploit at github.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept.
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
