Globus Toolkit up to 3.2.x Certificates tmp symlink

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Globus Toolkit up to 3.2.x. It has been classified as problematic. Affected is some unknown functionality of the file tmp of the component Certificates. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a symlink vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-61. The product, when opening a file or directory, does not sufficiently account for when the file is a symbolic link that resolves to a target outside of the intended control sphere. This could allow an attacker to cause the product to operate on unauthorized files. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, and integrity. CVE summarizes:

Globus Toolkit 3.2.x, 4.0.x, and 4.1.0 before 20060815 allow local users to obtain sensitive information (proxy certificates) and overwrite arbitrary files via a symlink attack on temporary files in the /tmp directory, as demonstrated by files created by (1) myproxy-admin-adduser, (2) grid-ca-sign, and (3) grid-security-config.

The weakness was released 08/18/2006 by Alex (Website). The advisory is available at globus.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2006-4233 since 08/18/2006. The exploitability is told to be easy. Local access is required to approach this attack. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 22240 (FreeBSD : globus -- Multiple tmpfile races (5039ae61-2c9f-11db-8401-000ae42e9b93)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks.

Upgrading to version 3.2.x eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (28410), Tenable (22240), SecurityFocus (BID 19549†), Secunia (SA21516†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-28295†).
