Horde Application Framework up to 3.1.1 index.php cross site scripting

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in Horde Application Framework up to 3.1.1 (Groupware Software). Affected is an unknown function of the file index.php. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-80. The product receives input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special characters such as "<", ">", and "&" that could be interpreted as web-scripting elements when they are sent to a downstream component that processes web pages. This is going to have an impact on integrity. CVE summarizes:

index.php in Horde Application Framework before 3.1.2 allows remote attackers to include web pages from other sites, which could be useful for phishing attacks, via a URL in the url parameter, aka "cross-site referencing." NOTE: some sources have referred to this issue as XSS, but it is different than classic XSS.

The bug was discovered 07/04/2006. The weakness was presented 08/21/2006 by Marc Ruef (Website). The advisory is available at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2006-4256 since 08/21/2006. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. This vulnerability is assigned to T1059.007 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 48 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. By approaching the search of inurl:index.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 28151 (Debian DSA-1406-1 : horde3 - several vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l.

Upgrading to version 3.1.2 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 years after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
