Details
A vulnerability was found in Helm up to 3.18.4. It has been declared as problematic. This vulnerability affects some unknown processing of the file /dev/zero of the component JSON Schema File Handler. The manipulation of the argument ref with an unknown input leads to a allocation of resources vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-770. The product allocates a reusable resource or group of resources on behalf of an actor without imposing any restrictions on the size or number of resources that can be allocated, in violation of the intended security policy for that actor. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:
Helm is a package manager for Charts for Kubernetes. Prior to version 3.18.5, it is possible to craft a JSON Schema file in a manner which could cause Helm to use all available memory and have an out of memory (OOM) termination. This issue has been resolved in Helm 3.18.5. A workaround involves ensuring all Helm charts that are being loaded into Helm do not have any reference of $ref pointing to /dev/zero.
The advisory is available at github.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2025-55199 since 08/08/2025. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely.
