Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in PostgreSQL up to 13.21/14.18/15.13/16.9/17.5. It has been classified as critical. Affected is an unknown code block of the component pg_dumpall/pg_restore. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a inclusion of functionality from untrusted control sphere vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-829. The product imports, requires, or includes executable functionality (such as a library) from a source that is outside of the intended control sphere. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Untrusted data inclusion in pg_dump in PostgreSQL allows a malicious superuser of the origin server to inject arbitrary code for restore-time execution as the client operating system account running psql to restore the dump, via psql meta-commands. pg_dumpall is also affected. pg_restore is affected when used to generate a plain-format dump. This is similar to MySQL CVE-2024-21096. Versions before PostgreSQL 17.6, 16.10, 15.14, 14.19, and 13.22 are affected.

The advisory is shared for download at postgresql.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2025-8714 since 08/07/2025. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 249339 (Debian dla-4273 : libecpg-compat3 - security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 13.22, 14.19, 15.14, 16.10 or 17.6 eliminates this vulnerability.
