Details
A vulnerability was found in phpGroupWare 0.9.16.010 (Groupware Software). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects some unknown functionality. The manipulation of the argument GLOBALS[phpgw_info][user][preferences][common][country] with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, and integrity. CVE summarizes:
Directory traversal vulnerability in calendar/inc/class.holidaycalc.inc.php in phpGroupWare 0.9.16.010 and earlier allows remote attackers to include arbitrary local files via a .. (dot dot) sequence and trailing null (%00) byte in the GLOBALS[phpgw_info][user][preferences][common][country] parameter.
The weakness was published 08/31/2006 by Kacper (Website). The advisory is shared for download at milw0rm.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2006-4458 since 08/30/2006. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1006.
A public exploit has been developed by Kacper and been published before and not just after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as functional. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (28627), Exploit-DB (2270), SecurityFocus (BID 19751†) and Secunia (SA21687†). Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
