Linux Kernel up to 6.15.6 AF_RXRPC Service rxrpc_alloc_incoming_call allocation of resources

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.15.6. This vulnerability affects the function rxrpc_alloc_incoming_call of the component AF_RXRPC Service. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a allocation of resources vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-770. The product allocates a reusable resource or group of resources on behalf of an actor without imposing any restrictions on the size or number of resources that can be allocated, in violation of the intended security policy for that actor. The impact remains unknown. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: rxrpc: Fix oops due to non-existence of prealloc backlog struct If an AF_RXRPC service socket is opened and bound, but calls are preallocated, then rxrpc_alloc_incoming_call() will oops because the rxrpc_backlog struct doesn't get allocated until the first preallocation is made. Fix this by returning NULL from rxrpc_alloc_incoming_call() if there is no backlog struct. This will cause the incoming call to be aborted.

The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2025-38514 since 04/16/2025. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 265954 (Ubuntu 20.04 LTS : Linux kernel (Oracle) vulnerabilities (USN-7776-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 5.4.296, 5.10.240, 5.15.189, 6.1.146, 6.6.99, 6.12.39 or 6.15.7 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch bf0ca6a1bc4fb904b598137c6718785a107e3adf/f7afb3ff01c42c49e8a143cdce400b95844bb506/f5e72b7824d08c206ce106d30cb37c4642900ccc/0eef29385d715d4c7fd707b18d4a9b76c76dd5e6/efc1b2b7c1a308b60df8f36bc2d7ce16d3999364/d1ff5f9d2c5405681457262e23c720b08977c11f/2c2e9ebeb036f9b1b09325ec5cfdfe0e78f357c3/880a88f318cf1d2a0f4c0a7ff7b07e2062b434a4 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
