Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Commvault CommCell up to 11.32.101/11.36.59 and classified as problematic. Affected by this issue is an unknown code of the component Administrator Login Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a password recoverable vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-257. The storage of passwords in a recoverable format makes them subject to password reuse attacks by malicious users. In fact, it should be noted that recoverable encrypted passwords provide no significant benefit over plaintext passwords since they are subject not only to reuse by malicious attackers but also by malicious insiders. If a system administrator can recover a password directly, or use a brute force search on the available information, the administrator can use the password on other accounts. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

An issue was discovered in Commvault before 11.36.60. During the brief window between installation and the first administrator login, remote attackers may exploit the default credential to gain admin control. This is limited to the setup phase, before any jobs have been configured.

The advisory is available at documentation.commvault.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2025-57789 since 08/19/2025. The exploitation is known to be difficult.
