Details
A vulnerability was found in Mattermost up to 9.11.17/10.5.8/10.8.3/10.9.1. It has been rated as problematic. This issue affects some unknown processing of the component Plugin Import. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Impacted is confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:
Mattermost versions 10.9.x <= 10.9.1, 10.8.x <= 10.8.3, 10.5.x <= 10.5.8, 9.11.x <= 9.11.17 fail to properly validate file paths during plugin import operations which allows restricted admin users to install unauthorized custom plugins via path traversal in the import functionality, bypassing plugin signature enforcement and marketplace restrictions.
The weakness was released by Dawid Kulikowski. The advisory is shared at mattermost.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2025-36530 since 07/22/2025. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. The exploitation needs additional levels of successful authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1006 for this issue.
