Details
A vulnerability was found in BeCubed Compression Plus up to 5.0.1.27 and classified as critical. This issue affects the function readfile. The manipulation of the argument size with an unknown input leads to a stack-based overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-121. A stack-based buffer overflow condition is a condition where the buffer being overwritten is allocated on the stack (i.e., is a local variable or, rarely, a parameter to a function). Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Stack-based buffer overflow in the ReadFile function in the ZOO-processing exports in the BeCubed Compression Plus before 5.0.1.28, as used in products including (1) Tumbleweed EMF, (2) VCOM/Ontrack PowerDesk Pro, (3) Canyon Drag and Zip, (4) Canyon Power File, and (5) Canyon Power File Gold, allow context-dependent attackers to execute arbitrary code via an inconsistent size parameter in a ZOO file header.
The bug was discovered 08/31/2006. The weakness was shared 09/05/2006 by Greg Sinclair (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at mnin.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2006-4554 since 09/05/2006. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 5 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 22308 (Compression Plus CP5DLL32.DLL ZOO Archive Header Processing Overflow RCE), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows and running in the context l.
Upgrading to version 5.0.1.28 eliminates this vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (28693), Tenable (22308), SecurityFocus (BID 19796†), OSVDB (28371†) and Secunia (SA21714†). Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
