Linux Kernel up to 6.7.6 tls recv infinite loop

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability marked as problematic has been reported in Linux Kernel up to 6.7.6. Affected is the function recv of the component tls. Performing a manipulation results in infinite loop. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2024-58239. No exploit is available. It is suggested to upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.7.6. It has been classified as problematic. This affects the function recv of the component tls. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a infinite loop vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-835. The product contains an iteration or loop with an exit condition that cannot be reached, i.e., an infinite loop. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: tls: stop recv() if initial process_rx_list gave us non-DATA If we have a non-DATA record on the rx_list and another record of the same type still on the queue, we will end up merging them: - process_rx_list copies the non-DATA record - we start the loop and process the first available record since it's of the same type - we break out of the loop since the record was not DATA Just check the record type and jump to the end in case process_rx_list did some work.

The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2024-58239 since 04/16/2025. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 265792 (SUSE SLES15 Security Update : kernel (SUSE-SU-2025:03310-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 5.4.270, 5.10.211, 5.15.150, 6.1.80, 6.6.19 or 6.7.7 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch f310143961e2d9a0479fca117ce869f8aaecc140/31e10d6cb0c9532ff070cf50da1657c3acee9276/4338032aa90bd1d5b33a4274e8fa8347cda5ee09/6756168add1c6c3ef1c32c335bb843a5d1f99a75/3b952d8fdfcf6fd8ea0b8954bc9277642cf0977f/a4ed943882a8fc057ea5a67643314245e048bbdd/fdfbaec5923d9359698cbb286bc0deadbb717504 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (265792) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2025-1898). If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
