ImageMagick up to 6.9.13-27/7.1.2-1 InterpretImageFilename write-what-where condition

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in ImageMagick up to 6.9.13-27/7.1.2-1. It has been classified as critical. This affects the function InterpretImageFilename. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a write-what-where condition vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-123. Any condition where the attacker has the ability to write an arbitrary value to an arbitrary location, often as the result of a buffer overflow. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

ImageMagick is free and open-source software used for editing and manipulating digital images. Prior to ImageMagick versions 6.9.13-28 and 7.1.2-2, a format string bug vulnerability exists in InterpretImageFilename function where user input is directly passed to FormatLocaleString without proper sanitization. An attacker can overwrite arbitrary memory regions, enabling a wide range of attacks from heap overflow to remote code execution. This issue has been patched in versions 6.9.13-28 and 7.1.2-2.

It is possible to read the advisory at github.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2025-55298 since 08/12/2025. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 264432 (SUSE SLED15 / SLES15 Security Update : ImageMagick (SUSE-SU-2025:03113-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 6.9.13-28 or 7.1.2-2 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at github.com. Applying the patch 439b362b93c074eea6c3f834d84982b43ef057d5 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at github.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
