GitLab Community Edition/Enterprise Edition up to 18.1.4/18.2.4/18.3.0 Web Interface code injection

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in GitLab Community Edition and Enterprise Edition up to 18.1.4/18.2.4/18.3.0. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code of the component Web Interface. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

An issue has been discovered in GitLab CE/EE affecting all versions before 18.1.5, 18.2 before 18.2.5, and 18.3 before 18.3.1 that under certain conditions could have allowed an authenticated attacker to distribute malicious code that appears harmless in the web interface by taking advantage of ambiguity between branches and tags during repository imports.

The weakness was released by st4nly0n as 545165. The advisory is shared at gitlab.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2025-5101 since 05/22/2025. The exploitation appears to be difficult. An attack has to be approached locally. The exploitation needs additional levels of successful authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059 for this issue.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 258043 (GitLab < 18.1.5 / 18.2 < 18.2.5 / 18.3 < 18.3.1 (CVE-2025-5101)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 18.1.5, 18.2.5 or 18.3.1 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (258043). If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
