Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Asterisk up to 20.15.1/21.10.1/22.5.1. It has been rated as problematic. Affected by this issue is the function get_authorization_header of the component Authorization Header Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a function return value vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-253. The product incorrectly checks a return value from a function, which prevents it from detecting errors or exceptional conditions. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:

Asterisk is an open source private branch exchange and telephony toolkit. Prior to versions 20.15.2, 21.10.2, and 22.5.2, if a SIP request is received with an Authorization header that contains a realm that wasn't in a previous 401 response's WWW-Authenticate header, or an Authorization header with an incorrect realm was received without a previous 401 response being sent, the get_authorization_header() function in res_pjsip_authenticator_digest will return a NULL. This wasn't being checked before attempting to get the digest algorithm from the header which causes a SEGV. This issue has been patched in versions 20.15.2, 21.10.2, and 22.5.2. There are no workarounds.

The advisory is available at github.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2025-57767 since 08/19/2025. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

Upgrading to version 20.15.2, 21.10.2 or 22.5.2 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 02993717b08f899d4aca9888062f35dfb198584f is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at github.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
