Details
A vulnerability was found in GNOME GLib up to 2.84.3. It has been classified as critical. Affected is the function get_tmp_file in the library glib/gfileutils.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a buffer under-read vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-127. The product reads from a buffer using buffer access mechanisms such as indexes or pointers that reference memory locations prior to the targeted buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
A flaw was found in glib. An integer overflow during temporary file creation leads to an out-of-bounds memory access, allowing an attacker to potentially perform path traversal or access private temporary file content by creating symbolic links. This vulnerability allows a local attacker to manipulate file paths and access unauthorized data. The core issue stems from insufficient validation of file path lengths during temporary file operations.
The advisory is available at gitlab.gnome.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2025-7039. The exploitability is told to be easy. Local access is required to approach this attack. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
