Linux Kernel up to 6.16.1 state issue

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.16.1. Affected is an unknown code block. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a state issue vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-371. The impact remains unknown. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: hfsplus: don't use BUG_ON() in hfsplus_create_attributes_file() When the volume header contains erroneous values that do not reflect the actual state of the filesystem, hfsplus_fill_super() assumes that the attributes file is not yet created, which later results in hitting BUG_ON() when hfsplus_create_attributes_file() is called. Replace this BUG_ON() with -EIO error with a message to suggest running fsck tool.

The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2025-38712 since 04/16/2025. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 02/10/2026).

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 261551 (Linux Distros Unpatched Vulnerability : CVE-2025-38712), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 5.4.297, 5.10.241, 5.15.190, 6.1.149, 6.6.103, 6.12.43, 6.15.11, 6.16.2 or 6.17-rc1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch bb0eea8e375677f586ad11c12e2525ed3fc698c2/9046566fa692f88954dac8c510f37ee17a15fdb7/03cd1db1494cf930e2fa042c9c13e32bffdb4eba/dee5c668ad71ddbcb4b48d95e8a4f371314ad41d/b3359392b75395a31af739a761f48f4041148226/1bb8da27ff15e346d4bc9e248e819c9a88ebf9d6/d768e3ed430e89a699bf89d3214dcbbf4648c939/ce5e387f396cbb5c061d9837abcac731e9e06f4d/c7c6363ca186747ebc2df10c8a1a51e66e0e32d9 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
