Gnu GnuTLS up to 1.4.3 Certificates verify.c

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Gnu GnuTLS up to 1.4.3 (Network Encryption Software). It has been declared as problematic. This vulnerability affects some unknown processing of the file verify.c of the component Certificates. As an impact it is known to affect integrity. CVE summarizes:

verify.c in GnuTLS before 1.4.4, when using an RSA key with exponent 3, does not properly handle excess data in the digestAlgorithm.parameters field when generating a hash, which allows remote attackers to forge a PKCS #1 v1.5 signature that is signed by that RSA key and prevents GnuTLS from correctly verifying X.509 and other certificates that use PKCS, a variant of CVE-2006-4339.

The bug was discovered 09/14/2006. The weakness was published 09/14/2006 by Daniel Bleichenbacher (Website). The advisory is available at redhat.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2006-4790 since 09/13/2006. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 22724 (Debian DSA-1182-1 : gnutls11 - cryptographic weakness), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 156242 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Update fo rGnuTLS (ELSA-2006:0680)).

Upgrading to version 1.4.4 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (28953), Tenable (22724), SecurityFocus (BID 20027†), OSVDB (28778†) and Secunia (SA21937†). Similar entries are available at VDB-1948, VDB-32667 and VDB-32657. If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
