Linux Kernel up to 6.16.3 media vb2_is_busy buffer overflow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability labeled as critical has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.16.3. This issue affects the function vb2_is_busy of the component media. The manipulation results in buffer overflow. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2025-39714. No exploit is available. The affected component should be upgraded.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.16.3. Affected is the function vb2_is_busy of the component media. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a buffer overflow vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-120. The product copies an input buffer to an output buffer without verifying that the size of the input buffer is less than the size of the output buffer, leading to a buffer overflow. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: media: usbtv: Lock resolution while streaming When an program is streaming (ffplay) and another program (qv4l2) changes the TV standard from NTSC to PAL, the kernel crashes due to trying to copy to unmapped memory. Changing from NTSC to PAL increases the resolution in the usbtv struct, but the video plane buffer isn't adjusted, so it overflows. [hverkuil: call vb2_is_busy instead of vb2_is_streaming]

The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2025-39714 since 04/16/2025. The exploitability is told to be easy. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 02/09/2026).

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 261627 (Linux Distros Unpatched Vulnerability : CVE-2025-39714), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 5.4.297, 5.10.241, 5.15.190, 6.1.149, 6.6.103, 6.12.44, 6.16.4 or 6.17-rc1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch c35e7c7a004ef379a1ae7c7486d4829419acad1d/ee7bade8b9244834229b12b6e1e724939bedd484/5427dda195d6baf23028196fd55a0c90f66ffa61/ef9b3c22405192afaa279077ddd45a51db90b83d/3d83d0b5ae5045a7a246ed116b5f6c688a12f9e9/c3d75524e10021aa5c223d94da4996640aed46c0/9f886d21e235c4bd038cb20f6696084304197ab3/7e40e0bb778907b2441bff68d73c3eb6b6cd319f is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
