Details
A vulnerability was found in FFmpeg 1.1.2 (Multimedia Processing Software) and classified as critical. This issue affects some unknown processing. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Buffer overflow in ffmpeg for xine-lib before 1.1.2 might allow context-dependent attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted AVI file and "bad indexes", a different vulnerability than CVE-2005-4048 and CVE-2006-2802.
The bug was discovered 07/11/2006. The weakness was disclosed 09/14/2006 (Website). The advisory is shared at us.debian.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2006-4799 since 09/14/2006. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 64 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 22354 (GLSA-200609-09 : FFmpeg: Buffer overflows), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165105 (SUSE Security Update for mono-core (SUSE-SA:2006:073)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (33653), Tenable (22354), SecurityFocus (BID 20009†), OSVDB (29553†) and Secunia (SA22230†).
