Affected by this issue is an unknown code of the component SPD. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Improper input validation for DIMM serial presence detect (SPD) metadata could allow an attacker with physical access, ring0 access on a system with a non-compliant DIMM, or control over the Root of Trust for BIOS update, to bypass SMM isolation potentially resulting in arbitrary code execution at the SMM level.
The advisory is shared for download at amd.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2024-36354 since 05/23/2024. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack needs to be approached locally. Additional levels of successful authentication are required for exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at EUVD (EUVD-2024-54969) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2025-1770). Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
