DLL search order hijacking vulnerability in the wave.exe executable for Windows 11, version 1.27.8. Exploitation of this vulnerability could allow attackers with local access to execute arbitrary code by placing an arbitrary file in the 'C:\Users\AppData\Local\Temp' directory, which could lead to arbitrary code execution and persistence. This vulnerability is only replicable in versions of Windows 11 and does not affect earlier versions.
The weakness was released by Alexander Huaman Jaimes. It is possible to read the advisory at incibe.es. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2025-40979 since 04/16/2025. The exploitation appears to be difficult. Attacking locally is a requirement. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1574 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
Upgrading to version 1.27.11 eliminates this vulnerability.
