A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in David Bennett PHP-Post 1.0.1 (Programming Language Software). Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code of the file footer.php. The manipulation of the argument template with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Directory traversal vulnerability in footer.php in David Bennett PHP-Post (PHPp) 1.0 and earlier allows remote attackers to read and include arbitrary local files via a .. (dot dot) sequence in the template parameter. NOTE: this was later reported to affect 1.0.1, and demonstrated for code execution by uploading and accessing an avatar file.
The weakness was published 09/16/2006 by HACKERS PAL (Kacper) (Website). The advisory is shared at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2006-4878 since 09/19/2006. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details and also a public exploit are known.
