Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.1.148/6.6.102/6.12.43/6.16.3. It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects the function btrfs_copy_root of the component btrfs. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a buffer overflow vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-120. The product copies an input buffer to an output buffer without verifying that the size of the input buffer is less than the size of the output buffer, leading to a buffer overflow. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: btrfs: abort transaction on unexpected eb generation at btrfs_copy_root() If we find an unexpected generation for the extent buffer we are cloning at btrfs_copy_root(), we just WARN_ON() and don't error out and abort the transaction, meaning we allow to persist metadata with an unexpected generation. Instead of warning only, abort the transaction and return -EUCLEAN.
The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2025-39800 since 04/16/2025. The exploitation appears to be easy. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 01/16/2026).
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 265710 (Debian dsa-6008 : ata-modules-6.12.31-armmp-di - security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading to version 6.1.149, 6.6.103, 6.12.44, 6.16.4 or 6.17-rc1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 4290e34fb87ae556b12c216efd0ae91583446b7a/4734255ef39b416864139dcda96a387fe5f33a6a/da2124719f386b6e5d4d4b1a2e67c440e4d5892f/f4f5bd9251a4cbe55aaa05725c6c3c32ad1f74b3/33e8f24b52d2796b8cfb28c19a1a7dd6476323a8 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (265710), EUVD (EUVD-2025-29186) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2025-2053). Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
