Linux Kernel up to 6.1.38/6.4.3 media pm_runtime_get_if_in_use reference count

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.1.38/6.4.3 and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function pm_runtime_get_if_in_use of the component media. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a reference count vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-911. The product uses a reference count to manage a resource, but it does not update or incorrectly updates the reference count. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: media: hi846: fix usage of pm_runtime_get_if_in_use() pm_runtime_get_if_in_use() does not only return nonzero values when the device is in use, it can return a negative errno too. And especially during resuming from system suspend, when runtime pm is not yet up again, -EAGAIN is being returned, so the subsequent pm_runtime_put() call results in a refcount underflow. Fix system-resume by handling -EAGAIN of pm_runtime_get_if_in_use().

The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2023-53177 since 09/15/2025. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 265176 (Linux Distros Unpatched Vulnerability : CVE-2023-53177), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
