Linux Kernel up to 5.15.86/6.0.17/6.1.3 btrfs reference count

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Linux Kernel up to 5.15.86/6.0.17/6.1.3 and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects some unknown functionality of the component btrfs. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a reference count vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-911. The product uses a reference count to manage a resource, but it does not update or incorrectly updates the reference count. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: btrfs: fix extent map use-after-free when handling missing device in read_one_chunk Store the error code before freeing the extent_map. Though it's reference counted structure, in that function it's the first and last allocation so this would lead to a potential use-after-free. The error can happen eg. when chunk is stored on a missing device and the degraded mount option is missing. Bugzilla: https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=216721

The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2022-50300 since 09/15/2025. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 265257 (Linux Distros Unpatched Vulnerability : CVE-2022-50300), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 5.15.87, 6.0.18 or 6.1.4 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch b8e7ed42bc3ca0d0e4191ee394d34962d3624c22/fce3713197ebba239e1c7e02174ed216ea1ee014/169a4cf46882974d4db6d85eb623ec898e51bbc0/1742e1c90c3da344f3bb9b1f1309b3f47482756a is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (265257) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2025-2053). Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
