Summary
A vulnerability described as critical has been identified in Linux Kernel up to 5.10.174/5.15.102/6.1.17/6.2.4. This impacts the function in_atomic of the file kernel/locking/spinlock_rt.c of the component EFI Runtime Service. Such manipulation leads to stack-based overflow.
This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2023-53216. There is no exploit available.
Upgrading the affected component is recommended.
Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 5.10.174/5.15.102/6.1.17/6.2.4 and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is the function in_atomic of the file kernel/locking/spinlock_rt.c of the component EFI Runtime Service. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a stack-based overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-121. A stack-based buffer overflow condition is a condition where the buffer being overwritten is allocated on the stack (i.e., is a local variable or, rarely, a parameter to a function). Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

This spinlock is taken through: efi_call_rts() \-efi_call_virt() \-efi_call_virt_pointer() \-arch_efi_call_virt_setup() Make 'efi_rt_lock' a raw_spinlock to avoid being preempted. [ardb: The EFI runtime services are called with a different set of translation tables, and are permitted to use the SIMD registers. The context switch code preserves/restores neither, and so EFI calls must be made with preemption disabled, rather than only disabling migration.]
The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2023-53216 since 09/15/2025. The exploitation is known to be easy. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 01/10/2026).
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 278484 (EulerOS 2.0 SP13 : kernel (EulerOS-SA-2025-2501)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading to version 5.10.175, 5.15.103, 6.1.18 or 6.2.5 eliminates this vulnerability.
