Linux Kernel up to 6.1.4 qlcnic_dcb_enable use after free

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.1.4 and classified as critical. This issue affects the function qlcnic_dcb_enable. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a use after free vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-416. Referencing memory after it has been freed can cause a program to crash, use unexpected values, or execute code. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: qlcnic: prevent ->dcb use-after-free on qlcnic_dcb_enable() failure adapter->dcb would get silently freed inside qlcnic_dcb_enable() in case qlcnic_dcb_attach() would return an error, which always happens under OOM conditions. This would lead to use-after-free because both of the existing callers invoke qlcnic_dcb_get_info() on the obtained pointer, which is potentially freed at that point. Propagate errors from qlcnic_dcb_enable(), and instead free the dcb pointer at callsite using qlcnic_dcb_free(). This also removes the now unused qlcnic_clear_dcb_ops() helper, which was a simple wrapper around kfree() also causing memory leaks for partially initialized dcb. Found by Linux Verification Center (linuxtesting.org) with the SVACE static analysis tool.

The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2022-50288 since 09/15/2025. The exploitation is known to be easy. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 01/10/2026).

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 270831 (SUSE SLES12 Security Update : kernel (SUSE-SU-2025:03614-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 4.14.303, 4.19.270, 5.4.229, 5.10.163, 5.15.87, 6.0.19 or 6.1.5 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 36999236f0b12d5de21a6f40e93b570727b9ceb2/d12a7510293d3370b234b0b7c5eda33e58786768/8f97eeb02a553cdc78c83a0596448a370e1518c4/513787ff9a331b461115e8a145a983d650a84fcb/95df720e64a6409d8152827a776c43f615e3321a/8df1dc04ce0e4c03b51a756749c250a9cb17d707/a2a694e6edbdb3efb34e1613a31fdcf6cf444a55/13a7c8964afcd8ca43c0b6001ebb0127baa95362 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (270831) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2025-2053). If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
