Linux Kernel up to 6.2.4 ubifs ubifs_destroy_tnc_subtree memory leak

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.2.4. It has been rated as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function ubifs_destroy_tnc_subtree of the component ubifs. Performing a manipulation results in memory leak. This vulnerability was named CVE-2023-53227. There is no available exploit. Upgrading the affected component is advised.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.2.4. This affects the function ubifs_destroy_tnc_subtree of the component ubifs. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory leak vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-401. The product does not sufficiently track and release allocated memory after it has been used, which slowly consumes remaining memory. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ubifs: dirty_cow_znode: Fix memleak in error handling path Following process will cause a memleak for copied up znode: dirty_cow_znode zn = copy_znode(c, znode); err = insert_old_idx(c, zbr->lnum, zbr->offs); if (unlikely(err)) return ERR_PTR(err); // No one refers to zn. Fix it by adding copied znode back to tnc, then it will be freed by ubifs_destroy_tnc_subtree() while closing tnc. Fetch a reproducer in [Link].

The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2023-53227 since 09/15/2025. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

Upgrading to version 4.14.308, 4.19.276, 5.4.235, 5.10.173, 5.15.100, 6.1.18 or 6.2.5 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 011050fc471cd0b32410694facb47bac20e7262b/5759076fc7c54614084002345a21bc2c578bf4a8/510b80abe8d2d89e4ff21d71f1804ba2e5d3a96b/9d4768523b092bfb9a9bfa6b1d903b968c8008cf/10b6c359e374df1120b951768260083ef047d7fb/76c488e8a0e2783c6d8753cb7354a420593e8c30/bbcf899036eeb98c3a938fb08946c6b52771f71c/122deabfe1428bffe95e2bf364ff8a5059bdf089 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at EUVD (EUVD-2023-59857) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2025-2053). If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
