Summary
A vulnerability described as critical has been identified in Linux Kernel up to 6.1.17/6.2.4. This vulnerability affects the function shared_cpu_map of the component cacheinfo. Such manipulation leads to out-of-bounds.
This vulnerability is referenced as CVE-2023-53254. No exploit is available.
Upgrading the affected component is recommended.
Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.1.17/6.2.4 and classified as problematic. Affected by this issue is the function shared_cpu_map of the component cacheinfo. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a out-of-bounds vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-125. The product reads data past the end, or before the beginning, of the intended buffer. Impacted is confidentiality. CVE summarizes:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: cacheinfo: Fix shared_cpu_map to handle shared caches at different levels The cacheinfo sets up the shared_cpu_map by checking whether the caches with the same index are shared between CPUs. However, this will trigger slab-out-of-bounds access if the CPUs do not have the same cache hierarchy. Another problem is the mismatched shared_cpu_map when the shared cache does not have the same index between CPUs. CPU0 I D L3 index 0 1 2 x ^ ^ ^ ^ index 0 1 2 3 CPU1 I D L2 L3 This patch checks each cache is shared with all caches on other CPUs.
The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2023-53254 since 09/15/2025. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 270831 (SUSE SLES12 Security Update : kernel (SUSE-SU-2025:03614-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading to version 6.1.18 or 6.2.5 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 2f588d0345d69a35e451077afed428fd057a5e34/dea49f2993f57d8a2df2cacb0bf649ef49b28879/198102c9103fc78d8478495971947af77edb05c1 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at CNNVD (CNNVD-202509-2282), Tenable (270831) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2025-2053). Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
