A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Microsoft Internet Explorer up to 6 (Web Browser). This affects some unknown functionality of the component CSS Parser. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Unspecified vulnerability in Internet Explorer 5.01 and 6 SP1 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via crafted Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) strings that trigger memory corruption during parsing, related to use of out-of-bounds pointers.
The weakness was presented 08/14/2007 by Hu Qianwei with Microsoft as MS07-045 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). It is possible to read the advisory at microsoft.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2007-0943 since 02/14/2007. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 102058 , which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 100050 (Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (MS07-045)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch MS07-045 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 12277. In this case the pattern Content-Type|3A| text/css is used for detection. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 9020.
