Upgrading the affected component is recommended.
Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.44/6.16.4/6.17-rc3. It has been classified as critical. Affected is the function bnxt_set_dflt_rings. The manipulation of the argument tx_ring[] with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: bnxt_en: Fix memory corruption when FW resources change during ifdown bnxt_set_dflt_rings() assumes that it is always called before any TC has been created. So it doesn't take bp->num_tc into account and assumes that it is always 0 or 1. In the FW resource or capability change scenario, the FW will return flags in bnxt_hwrm_if_change() that will cause the driver to reinitialize and call bnxt_cancel_reservations(). This will lead to bnxt_init_dflt_ring_mode() calling bnxt_set_dflt_rings() and bp->num_tc may be greater than 1. This will cause bp->tx_ring[] to be sized too small and cause memory corruption in bnxt_alloc_cp_rings(). Fix it by properly scaling the TX rings by bp->num_tc in the code paths mentioned above. Add 2 helper functions to determine bp->tx_nr_rings and bp->tx_nr_rings_per_tc.
The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2025-39810 since 04/16/2025. The exploitability is told to be easy. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 12/27/2025).
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 265195 (Linux Distros Unpatched Vulnerability : CVE-2025-39810), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading to version 6.12.45, 6.16.5 or 6.17-rc4 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch d00e98977ef519280b075d783653e2c492fffbb6/9ab6a9950f152e094395d2e3967f889857daa185/2747328ba2714f1a7454208dbbc1dc0631990b4a is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (265195) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2025-2077). Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
