Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.16.4/6.17-rc3 and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is some unknown processing of the component mlx5. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory leak vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-401. The product does not sufficiently track and release allocated memory after it has been used, which slowly consumes remaining memory. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: net/mlx5: HWS, Fix memory leak in hws_action_get_shared_stc_nic error flow When an invalid stc_type is provided, the function allocates memory for shared_stc but jumps to unlock_and_out without freeing it, causing a memory leak. Fix by jumping to free_shared_stc label instead to ensure proper cleanup.
The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2025-39834 since 04/16/2025. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 265185 (Linux Distros Unpatched Vulnerability : CVE-2025-39834), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading to version 6.16.5 or 6.17-rc4 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 051fd8576a2e4e95d5870c5c9f8679c5b16882e4/a630f83592cdad1253523a1b760cfe78fef6cd9c is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
