Linux Kernel up to 6.16.4/6.17-rc3 mlx5 hws_pool_buddy_init memory leak

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.16.4/6.17-rc3. It has been classified as critical. Affected is the function hws_pool_buddy_init of the component mlx5. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory leak vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-401. The product does not sufficiently track and release allocated memory after it has been used, which slowly consumes remaining memory. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: net/mlx5: HWS, Fix memory leak in hws_pool_buddy_init error path In the error path of hws_pool_buddy_init(), the buddy allocator cleanup doesn't free the allocator structure itself, causing a memory leak. Add the missing kfree() to properly release all allocated memory.

The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2025-39830 since 04/16/2025. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 265217 (Linux Distros Unpatched Vulnerability : CVE-2025-39830), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
