Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.1.149/6.6.103/6.12.44/6.16.4/6.17-rc1. It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is an unknown code of the component smb. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. The impact remains unknown. CVE summarizes:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: smb: client: fix race with concurrent opens in rename(2) Besides sending the rename request to the server, the rename process also involves closing any deferred close, waiting for outstanding I/O to complete as well as marking all existing open handles as deleted to prevent them from deferring closes, which increases the race window for potential concurrent opens on the target file. Fix this by unhashing the dentry in advance to prevent any concurrent opens on the target.
The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2025-39825 since 04/16/2025. The exploitation is known to be difficult. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 265221 (Linux Distros Unpatched Vulnerability : CVE-2025-39825), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading to version 6.1.150, 6.6.104, 6.12.45, 6.16.5 or 6.17-rc2 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch c9e7de284da0be5b44dbe79d71573f9f7f9b144c/24b9ed739c8c5b464d983e12cf308982f3ae93c2/c9991af5e09924f6f3b3e6996a5e09f9504b4358/289f945acb20b9b54fe4d13895e44aa58965ddb2/d84291fc7453df7881a970716f8256273aca5747 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
