Linux Kernel up to 6.4.3 dp use after free

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 5.10.187/5.15.120/6.1.38/6.3.12/6.4.3. It has been rated as critical. This issue affects an unknown code of the component dp. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a use after free vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-416. Referencing memory after it has been freed can cause a program to crash, use unexpected values, or execute code. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: drm/msm/dp: Free resources after unregistering them The DP component's unbind operation walks through the submodules to unregister and clean things up. But if the unbind happens because the DP controller itself is being removed, all the memory for those submodules has just been freed. Change the order of these operations to avoid the many use-after-free that otherwise happens in this code path. Patchwork: https://patchwork.freedesktop.org/patch/542166/

It is possible to read the advisory at git.kernel.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2023-53316 since 09/16/2025. The exploitation is known to be easy. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 12/27/2025).

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 265643 (Linux Distros Unpatched Vulnerability : CVE-2023-53316), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 5.10.188, 5.15.121, 6.1.39, 6.3.13 or 6.4.4 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch c67a55f7cc8d767d624235bf1bcd0947e56abe0f/3c3f3d35f5e05c468b048eb42a4f8c62c6655692/4e9f1a2367aea7d61f6781213e25313cd983b0d7/5c3278db06e332fdc14f3f297499fb88ded264d2/ca47d0dc00968358c136a1847cfed550cedfd1b5/fa0048a4b1fa7a50c8b0e514f5b428abdf69a6f8 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
