The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2023-53357. There is no exploit available.
It is advisable to upgrade the affected component.
Details
A vulnerability has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.4.3 and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects the function md_bitmap_checkpage. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a return value vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-252. The product does not check the return value from a method or function, which can prevent it from detecting unexpected states and conditions. The impact remains unknown. CVE summarizes:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: md/raid10: check slab-out-of-bounds in md_bitmap_get_counter If we write a large number to md/bitmap_set_bits, md_bitmap_checkpage() will return -EINVAL because 'page >= bitmap->pages', but the return value was not checked immediately in md_bitmap_get_counter() in order to set *blocks value and slab-out-of-bounds occurs. Move check of 'page >= bitmap->pages' to md_bitmap_get_counter() and return directly if true.
The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2023-53357 since 09/16/2025. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 12/27/2025).
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 265615 (Linux Distros Unpatched Vulnerability : CVE-2023-53357), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading to version 4.19.291, 5.4.251, 5.10.188, 5.15.121, 6.1.39, 6.3.13 or 6.4.4 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 374fb914304d9b500721007f3837ea8f1f9a2418/b0b971fe7d61411ede63c3291764dbde1577ef2c/39fa14e824acfd470db4f42c354297456bd82b53/a134dd582c0d5b6068efa308bd485cf1d00b3f65/be1a3ec63a840cc9e59a033acf154f56255699a1/152bb26796ff054af50b2ee1b3ca56e364e4f61b/bea301c046110bf421a3ce153fb868cb8d618e90/301867b1c16805aebbc306aafa6ecdc68b73c7e5 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
