Linux Kernel up to 5.15.99/6.1.17/6.2.4 dwc3 debugfs_lookup memory leak

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2023-53415. There is no exploit available. It is suggested to upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Linux Kernel up to 5.15.99/6.1.17/6.2.4. This issue affects the function debugfs_lookup of the component dwc3. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory leak vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-401. The product does not sufficiently track and release allocated memory after it has been used, which slowly consumes remaining memory. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: USB: dwc3: fix memory leak with using debugfs_lookup() When calling debugfs_lookup() the result must have dput() called on it, otherwise the memory will leak over time. To make things simpler, just call debugfs_lookup_and_remove() instead which handles all of the logic at once. Note, the root dentry for the debugfs directory for the device needs to be saved so we don't have to keep looking it up, which required a bit more refactoring to properly create and remove it when needed.

It is possible to read the advisory at git.kernel.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2023-53415 since 09/17/2025. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 265611 (Linux Distros Unpatched Vulnerability : CVE-2023-53415), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 5.15.100, 6.1.18 or 6.2.5 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch cf52c320cf74245ce1c12b0bd48f77b87d77fbc9/ce234af49d103d95e3fdca59b25e0d0242f41bb4/bab872b638130a18fd54d9adfad7db77ed6457be/be308d68785b205e483b3a0c61ba3a82da468f2c is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (265611) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2025-2092). Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
