Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.1.38/6.3.12/6.4.3. Affected is the function smb2_compound_op of the component cifs. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a use after free vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-416. Referencing memory after it has been freed can cause a program to crash, use unexpected values, or execute code. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: cifs: prevent use-after-free by freeing the cfile later In smb2_compound_op we have a possible use-after-free which can cause hard to debug problems later on. This was revealed during stress testing with KASAN enabled kernel. Fixing it by moving the cfile free call to a few lines below, after the usage.
