Details
A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Linux Kernel up to 5.10.179/5.15.110/6.1.27/6.2.14/6.3.1. Affected is the function fw_info of the component wifi. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory leak vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-401. The product does not sufficiently track and release allocated memory after it has been used, which slowly consumes remaining memory. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: wifi: iwlwifi: fw: fix memory leak in debugfs Fix a memory leak that occurs when reading the fw_info file all the way, since we return NULL indicating no more data, but don't free the status tracking object.
The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2023-53422 since 09/17/2025. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 265534 (Linux Distros Unpatched Vulnerability : CVE-2023-53422), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading to version 5.10.180, 5.15.111, 6.1.28, 6.2.15 or 6.3.2 eliminates this vulnerability.
