Bluefeet Starch up to 0.14 Default Session ID Generator rand generation of predictable numbers or identifiers

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Bluefeet Starch up to 0.14. It has been classified as problematic. Affected is the function rand of the component Default Session ID Generator. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a generation of predictable numbers or identifiers vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-340. The product uses a scheme that generates numbers or identifiers that are more predictable than required. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality. CVE summarizes:

Starch versions 0.14 and earlier generate session ids insecurely. The default session id generator returns a SHA-1 hash seeded with a counter, the epoch time, the built-in rand function, the PID, and internal Perl reference addresses. The PID will come from a small set of numbers, and the epoch time may be guessed, if it is not leaked from the HTTP Date header. The built-in rand function is unsuitable for cryptographic usage. Predicable session ids could allow an attacker to gain access to systems.

The advisory is available at github.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2025-40925 since 04/16/2025. The exploitability is told to be difficult. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. This vulnerability is assigned to T1600.001 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
