Linux Kernel up to 6.17-rc5 mediatek for_each_child_of_node reference count

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability identified as critical has been detected in Linux Kernel up to 6.17-rc5. The impacted element is the function for_each_child_of_node of the component mediatek. The manipulation leads to reference count. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2025-39882. No exploit exists. You should upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.17-rc5 and classified as critical. This issue affects the function for_each_child_of_node of the component mediatek. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a reference count vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-911. The product uses a reference count to manage a resource, but it does not update or incorrectly updates the reference count. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: drm/mediatek: fix potential OF node use-after-free The for_each_child_of_node() helper drops the reference it takes to each node as it iterates over children and an explicit of_node_put() is only needed when exiting the loop early. Drop the recently introduced bogus additional reference count decrement at each iteration that could potentially lead to a use-after-free.

It is possible to read the advisory at git.kernel.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2025-39882 since 04/16/2025. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 265874 (Linux Distros Unpatched Vulnerability : CVE-2025-39882), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 6.6.107, 6.12.48, 6.16.8, 6.17-rc4 or 6.17-rc6 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch b2fbe0f9f80b9cfa1e06ddcf8b863d918394ef1d/b58a26cdd4795c1ce6a80e38e9348885555dacd6/c4901802ed1ce859242e10af06e6a7752cba0497/4de37a48b6b58faaded9eb765047cf0d8785ea18 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (265874) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2025-2107). Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
