NVIDIA CUDA Toolkit ELF File heap-based overflow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in NVIDIA CUDA Toolkit. Affected is an unknown function of the component ELF File Handler. The manipulation leads to heap-based overflow. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2025-23308. An attack has to be approached locally. There is no exploit available. It is recommended to upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in NVIDIA CUDA Toolkit (version now known). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects some unknown processing of the component ELF File Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a heap-based overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-122. A heap overflow condition is a buffer overflow, where the buffer that can be overwritten is allocated in the heap portion of memory, generally meaning that the buffer was allocated using a routine such as malloc(). Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

NVIDIA CUDA Toolkit for all platforms contains a vulnerability in nvdisasm where an attacker may cause a heap-based buffer overflow by getting the user to run nvdisasm on a malicious ELF file. A successful exploit of this vulnerability may lead to arbitrary code execution at the privilege level of the user running nvdisasm.

The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2025-23308 since 01/14/2025. The exploitation is known to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 266128 (Linux Distros Unpatched Vulnerability : CVE-2025-23308), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (266128) and EUVD (EUVD-2025-30963). If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
