Details
A vulnerability was found in Jupyterlab up to 4.4.7. It has been classified as problematic. Affected is an unknown function. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a reverse tabnabbing vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-1022. The web application produces links to untrusted external sites outside of its sphere of control, but it does not properly prevent the external site from modifying security-critical properties of the window.opener object, such as the location property. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality. CVE summarizes:
jupyterlab is an extensible environment for interactive and reproducible computing, based on the Jupyter Notebook Architecture. Prior to version 4.4.8, links generated with LaTeX typesetters in Markdown files and Markdown cells in JupyterLab and Jupyter Notebook did not include the noopener attribute. This is deemed to have no impact on the default installations. Theoretically users of third-party LaTeX-rendering extensions could find themselves vulnerable to reverse tabnabbing attacks if links generated by those extensions included target=_blank (no such extensions are known at time of writing) and they were to click on a link generated in LaTeX (typically visibly different from other links). This issue has been patched in version 4.4.8.
The advisory is available at github.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2025-59842 since 09/22/2025. The exploitability is told to be difficult. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 266022 (Fedora 44 : jupyterlab / python-notebook (2025-2171590e11)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
