Linux Kernel up to 5.15.85/6.0.15/6.1.1 crypto hpre_remove allocation of resources

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Linux Kernel up to 5.15.85/6.0.15/6.1.1. Affected by this vulnerability is the function hpre_remove of the component crypto. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a allocation of resources vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-770. The product allocates a reusable resource or group of resources on behalf of an actor without imposing any restrictions on the size or number of resources that can be allocated, in violation of the intended security policy for that actor. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: crypto: hisilicon/hpre - fix resource leak in remove process In hpre_remove(), when the disable operation of qm sriov failed, the following logic should continue to be executed to release the remaining resources that have been allocated, instead of returning directly, otherwise there will be resource leakage.

It is possible to read the advisory at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2022-50420 since 09/17/2025. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 06/07/2026).

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 319448 (EulerOS Virtualization 2.13.1 : kernel (EulerOS-SA-2026-2132)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 5.15.86, 6.0.16 or 6.1.2 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 2b3e3ecdb402ff1053ee25b598ff21b9ddf4384f/4e0de941d252d4e7c985981e78480c8d6f020b64/cb873c93a7ad27681920bf062ef052fca1e8d5b1/45e6319bd5f2154d8b8c9f1eaa4ac030ba0d330c is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (319448) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2025-2187). Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
