Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Linux Kernel up to 5.4.256/5.10.194/5.15.131/6.1.53/6.5.3. Affected by this issue is the function mvpp2_ethtool_get_rxnfc of the component net. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: net: ethernet: mvpp2_main: fix possible OOB write in mvpp2_ethtool_get_rxnfc() rules is allocated in ethtool_get_rxnfc and the size is determined by rule_cnt from user space. So rule_cnt needs to be check before using rules to avoid OOB writing or NULL pointer dereference.
The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2023-53495 since 10/01/2025. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
Upgrading to version 5.4.257, 5.10.195, 5.15.132, 6.1.54 or 6.5.4 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch ba6673824efa3dc198b04a54e69dce480066d7d9/61054a8ddb176b155a8f2bacdfefb3727187f5d9/5bb09dddc724c5f7c4dc6dd3bfebd685eecd93e8/349638f7e5d3c7d328565587bb7b0454bbee02e2/625b70d31dd4df4b96b3ddcbe251debb33bd67f5/51fe0a470543f345e3c62b6798929de3ddcedc1d is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at EUVD (EUVD-2025-32780) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2025-2187). Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
