Linux Kernel up to 5.15.131/6.1.52/6.4.15/6.5.2 iommu_v2 race condition

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability identified as critical has been detected in Linux Kernel up to 5.15.131/6.1.52/6.4.15/6.5.2. This vulnerability affects the function iommu_v2. The manipulation leads to race condition. This vulnerability is referenced as CVE-2023-53501. No exploit is available. You should upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 5.15.131/6.1.52/6.4.15/6.5.2 and classified as critical. This issue affects the function iommu_v2. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. The impact remains unknown. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: iommu/amd/iommu_v2: Fix pasid_state refcount dec hit 0 warning on pasid unbind When unbinding pasid - a race condition exists vs outstanding page faults. To prevent this, the pasid_state object contains a refcount. * set to 1 on pasid bind * incremented on each ppr notification start * decremented on each ppr notification done * decremented on pasid unbind Since refcount_dec assumes that refcount will never reach 0: the current implementation causes the following to be invoked on pasid unbind: REFCOUNT_WARN("decrement hit 0; leaking memory") Fix this issue by changing refcount_dec to refcount_dec_and_test to explicitly handle refcount=1.

It is possible to read the advisory at git.kernel.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2023-53501 since 10/01/2025. The exploitation is known to be difficult. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

Upgrading to version 5.15.132, 6.1.53, 6.4.16 or 6.5.3 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch a50d60b8f2aff46dd7c7edb4a5835cdc4d432c22/13ed255248dfbbb7f23f9170c7a537fb9ca22c73/9ccc51be3126b25cfe9351dbffde946c925cc28a/98d86bf32187db27946ca817c2467a5f2f7aa02f/534103bcd52ca9c1fecbc70e717b4a538dc4ded8 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2025-2187). Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
