Details
A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in TP-Link AX1800 (the affected version is unknown). Affected is an unknown code of the file minidlna-1.1.2/upnpsoap.c. The manipulation of the argument db_dir with an unknown input leads to a stack-based overflow vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-121. A stack-based buffer overflow condition is a condition where the buffer being overwritten is allocated on the stack (i.e., is a local variable or, rarely, a parameter to a function). This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
TP-Link AX1800 WiFi 6 Router (Archer AX21) devices allow unauthenticated attackers (on the LAN) to execute arbitrary code as root via the db_dir field to minidlnad. The attacker obtains the ability to modify files.db, and that can be used to reach a stack-based buffer overflow in minidlna-1.1.2/upnpsoap.c. Exploitation requires that a USB flash drive is connected to the router (customers often do this to make a \\192.168.0.1 share available on their local network).
The advisory is shared for download at gist.github.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2023-28760 since 03/23/2023. The exploitability is told to be easy. The attack needs to be initiated within the local network. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 10/02/2025).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
