Integer overflow in Microsoft Word 2000, 2002, 2003, 2004 for Mac, and v.X for Mac allows remote user-assisted attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted string in a Word document, which overflows a 16-bit integer length value, aka "Memmove Code Execution," a different vulnerability than CVE-2006-3651 and CVE-2006-4693.

The bug was discovered 10/10/2006. The weakness was released 10/10/2006 by Chen Xiao Bo (McAfee) with McAfee AVERT Labs as MS06-060 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is available at microsoft.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2006-3647 since 07/17/2006. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2682 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 22533 (MS06-060: Vulnerabilities in Microsoft Word Could Allow Remote Code Execution (924554)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 110046 (Microsoft Word Remote Code Execution Vulnerabilities (MS06-060)).

Applying the patch MS06-060 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 4765.
