Redis up to 8.2.1 Lua integer overflow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability was found in Redis up to 8.2.1. It has been declared as problematic. This impacts an unknown function of the component Lua Handler. Executing a manipulation can lead to integer overflow. This vulnerability is tracked as CVE-2025-46819. The attack is restricted to local execution. No exploit exists. It is recommended to upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in Redis up to 8.2.1. This vulnerability affects some unknown processing of the component Lua Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a integer overflow vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-190. The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound, when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This can introduce other weaknesses when the calculation is used for resource management or execution control. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Redis is an open source, in-memory database that persists on disk. Versions 8.2.1 and below allow an authenticated user to use a specially crafted LUA script to read out-of-bound data or crash the server and subsequent denial of service. The problem exists in all versions of Redis with Lua scripting. This issue is fixed in version 8.2.2. To workaround this issue without patching the redis-server executable is to prevent users from executing Lua scripts. This can be done using ACL to block a script by restricting both the EVAL and FUNCTION command families.

The advisory is available at github.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2025-46819 since 04/30/2025. The exploitation appears to be difficult. Local access is required to approach this attack. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 269460 (Linux Distros Unpatched Vulnerability : CVE-2025-46819), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 8.2.2 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (269460) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2025-2196). If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
